About Noto Peninsula Earthquake

The Noto Peninsula is located on the Sea of Japan side in the center of the Japanese archipelago and is the largest peninsula in Japan.

The rich nature of the mountains and the sea, as well as the beauty of the local culture, festivals, and traditions, make it a popular tourist destination.

On January 1, 2024, in the mood to celebrate the New Year, a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale and a maximum intensity of 7 occurred off the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. Tsunamis and fires were also triggered, claiming many victims. Even now, collapsed roads, debris, and landslides have blocked roads, and rescue operations are still ineffective. The Noto Peninsula has a bitterly cold winter, and the victims are forced to live in shelters suffering from cold and hunger. The earthquake has left more than 90 dead and 200 missing (as of January 5), and rescue efforts by the Self-Defense Forces and police are still underway.
